Top 5 Best Pho in Melbourne
August 26th, 2008
1. Chu The - (03) 9687 8265 - 92 Hopkins St Footscray 3011
This is my current favourite spot. Very welcoming and kid friendly (they give the kids their own little bowls and cut up the noodles with scissors) . Very pho focused. (Nothing else, nothing vegetarian). Quality ingredients. Out the back you can see the cauldrons of pho being tended too.
2. Co Do - (03) 9421 2418 - 196 Victoria Street Richmond 3121
Friendly, welcoming. Great standard of Pho. Also Great Bun Mam, noodle soup with a base of preserved salted fish. Refuge from bustling Victoria Street.
3. Duan Com Viet Nam - 69 Alfrieda Street St Albans 3021
Fantastic Pho but the specialty is Bun Bo Hue (chili beef soup from central Vietnam). There is outdoor seating at the front of the restaurant, which is a great place to have a Vietnamese style coffee and take in the bustling strip shopping centre. Song Huong, the place next door is also very good.
4. Pho Hung Vuong - (03) 9689 6002 - 128 Hopkins Street Footscray 3011
Clean, shiny and new. Very busy, plenty of patrons. Excellent pho.
5. Pho Hung - (03) 9470 1588 - 447 High Street Preston 3072
The closest pho shop to my house. The standard is very consistent, and they do a stand out Bo Kho (a rich dark soup with stewed chunks of beef and carrot). Very tolerant of unruly children.

I’ll agree that Co Do is the pick of Victoria Street, as for Hopkins St… well, I reckon Huy Huy (108 Hopkins St. 9687 4130) is wonderful - very friendly in the same way as Co Do.

[…] 5s are pointless. I mean, as soon as they’re done, they’re redundant. My recent top 5 has been shattered by a recent visit to Footscray. Pho Tam is a fish bowl of a place, on a corner […]

I agree with you about Pho Hung in Preston being children tolerant- ours almost ended up in their lucky fountain/water feature. They emptied it of all the water actually-much to our embarrassment. The owner shouted out from the back of the restaurant : “it’s ok, it’s ok, you eat, let them play. you eat!” We have made it our number one eating out choice we have three kids under 4.

That is a great story!
What is it with kids and water fountains? E will put her hand into the most grimy disgusting water.

Hi johnn - I’m pretty sure that Co Do will do a vegetable rice noodle soup. One of the reasons I like Co Do is the fantastic mountains of fresh salad they give you to pile into your soup. That is vegetable enough for me. I was at Pho Tam (leeds street footscray) yesterday and they do veg rice noodle soup too.

We are about to embark on a re-aquaintance with pho, by trying some in different suburbs you can reach by train. Footscray is our nearest centre for pho, and we used to spend just about every Sunday lunch in one particular Hopkins St eatery. However, over a three year period they went from using msg in their soup, to using soup in their msg… And I see this eatery makes your list and is described as ’shiny and new’. The old recipe in the old restaurant were just fine, but they had to go ahead and change everything. That’s why, instead of eating pho one a week, we barely eat pho once a year. Time to get re-aquainted: please list any restaurant that uses msg (M gets a rash and bad headache within an hour of ingesting MSG). .. J&M

We love Pho Hung in Preston - its our local. Great food, great casual atmosphere and the wait staff will always find a table for you, even on busy nights. We take friends and they always rave about it.

Pho Hung Vuong in Springvale: The best Pho bar none.
But going at the right time is important… when the stock is richest and thickest.
Trying going on a weekday between 1.30 and 3pm. I guarantee no disappointment
Try the sliced beef and sausage. It is seriously sexy.
A real Pho fan I am.
