Pho in the hood
September 23rd, 2007I was delight to recently discover a sign sticky taped to the window of a local Vietnamese restaurant. It proudly introduced the arrival of a new dish – my favourite dish. This was great news. I didn’t have high hopes, but went down to try it out. You know what? It wasn’t bad at all. It was certainly not of the quality to be found further afield, but if I’m ever in need of an emergency Pho fix, I know where to go.

Wikipedia entry on pronunciation of pho. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pho
“The Vietnamese word “phở” is properly pronounced with a falling-rising tone, as if asking a question. Its final vowel is not a long “o,” but instead rhymes, at least to Anglophone ears, with the “u” in the English word “but”. A more accurate way to produce this sound is to make an English /o/ sound but not round the lips. The “ph” is pronounced as an “f.” The resulting pronunciation sounds like ‘fuh?’.”

I knew how to pronounce it! We have a takeaway (small eat-in) place in Geelong called ‘Pho’.. I enjoy it.. but I get heart arrythmia’s sometime after eating it. I can react to certain chemicals and food additives. I guess the best Pho then would be the one I’d make at home? Sooo many recipes around for it though!
